Congo-Azerbaijan: a protocol of intent signed to promote biodiversity
On April 4 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Arlette Soudan-Nonault, Minister of the Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin, and Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, signed a protocol of intent between the two governments in the fields of the environment and sustainable development.
The protocol signed is an extension of the cooperation agreement between the Government of Congo and the Government of Azerbaijan, aimed at enhancing biodiversity and natural capital for diversification and economic development. It is part of President Denis Sassou N'Guesso's state mission to Baku, Azerbaijan.
The memorandum of understanding covers several areas of partnership, including the organization of a high-level side event to be included in the COP29 agenda, co-chaired by the Congolese head of state, Denis Sassou N'Guesso.The event will be co-chaired by the Congolese Head of State, Denis Sassou N'Guesso, in his capacity as Chairman of the Congo Basin Climate Commission, and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, whose country holds the presidency of COP29.
The event will focus on the three tropical forest basins, and will bring together the heads of state and government of the countries in these three major basins, the UN SecretarySecretary-General of the United Nations, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, partner countries and donors.
