Cameroon: 1 billion 600 thousand F to boost fish production

The Caisse de Développement de la Pêche Maritime (CDPM) has unveiled plans to support the production of more fish.

The plans were unveiled to the structure's Board of Directors at its 66th Ordinary Session in Douala. During this session chaired by the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr Taïga, devoted to the examination of the 2024 to 2026 Performance Project, a budget of 1 billion 600 thousand francs was adopted.

The budget will enable them to strengthen fisheries control and surveillance, and provide sufficient support to artisanal fisheries and aquaculture players. It will also pave the way for the production of better quality fish.

In 2023, the CDPM's priority action included strengthening fisheries control to reduce illegal and unreported fishing. In 2022, its activities focused on organizing awareness-raising campaigns for fishing communities on the need to protect the environment, reduce pollution and promote aquaculture by training stakeholders.

Fish situation

In 2023, Cameroon's fish production will amount to 150,086 tonnes. Compared with production in 2022, which stood at 145,621 tonnes, this represents an increase of 4,465 tonnes in absolute terms and 3% in relative terms.

Although production is up, it is still low in relation to national demand, which is met by imports.
