On November 30, Castro Marim will present the "Sal C - Valorization of salt flats for carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation" project, winner of the "Promove 2023 Award" from the "La Caixa" Foundation. The session will take place at the Revelim de St. António, in Castro Marim, at 10:30 am.

The application to the "Promove" program, which aims to boost Portugal's inland regions, in partnership with the Foundation for Science and Technology, was supported and coordinated between the municipality of Castro Marim, the BlueZ C Institute - Association for Marine Conservation and Carbon. This project demonstrates that the installation of seagrass beds in salt marsh channels enables the sustainable sequestration of blue carbon at a rate 30 times more efficient than forestry, in addition to improving water quality and retaining microplastics. With a total investment of around 200,000 euros, 75% of which is supported by the "La Caixa" Foundation, the project enhances the value chain of one of the most important activities in the Castromarine economy.conomie castromarine, by boosting the profitability of the saltworks, transforming a seasonal activity into a permanent one and creating new skilled jobs. Another decisive factor is its potential to safeguard future salt and fleur de sel production conditions, by enabling the retention of potentially polluting elements and microplastics that may appear in seawater.

For the municipality of Castro Marim, this is a project integrated with the values of efficiency and sustainability intended for the territory, articulated with the commitment that has been made to the path of blue carbon, in addition to the enhancement and promotion of natural heritage. and growth in the economic activity of the salt industry.
