Algeria/Environment: an awareness campaign against food waste

The Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energy launched Tuesday a national awareness campaign special month of Ramadhan, and this in collaboration with the Algerian Muslim Scouts (SMA), the High Council of Youth (CSJ) and the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC).

Presiding over the launching ceremony of this campaign, placed under the slogan "Eat and do not waste", the Minister of the sector, Fazia Dahleb said that this initiative aimed mainly to "reduce food waste and encourage to donate and participate, to strengthen the rational consumption, including water and energy and reject the behavior that harms the environment, including mainly excessive consumption and the uncontrolled disposal of garbage.

For the Minister, the month of Ramadhan often knows an increase in the amount of household waste of about 10%, which requires a greater effort to raise awareness of the need for rational consumption, with widespread concept of recycling.

As part of this national campaign, several awareness activities will be organized in partnership with associations, according to the minister who highlighted "the essential role of civil society, especially in the development of the principle of environmental citizenship.

According to Ms. Dahleb, this campaign will also contribute to consolidate the positive change towards healthy behaviors that serve the environment, the transformation to the green economy and the fight against the negative effects induced by climate change.

The Ministry is working to multiply this type of awareness campaigns that devote the participation of society in raising awareness of the reduction of waste, the fight against food waste, encouraging the adoption of environmentally friendly practices, and the dissemination of the culture of interest in places and streets, and this by adopting a plan of training and support for all stakeholders, said the minister.
