Vietnam/Efforts to build smart rural areas

Many localities are working hard to build smart rural areas, as part of a national program of rural modernization.

According to the said program, over the period 2021-2025, to be recognized as a new exemplary rural area, a commune must have at least one smart village, meeting the criteria issued by the provincial authorities.

Bach Dang commune is the first commune in Kinh Mon district, northern Hai Duong province, to be recognized as an exemplary rural area. Chairman of the Commune People's Committee Tran Van Tang said that most of the management work in the commune is now done via smart phones, from street lighting to irrigation systems.

For its part, Lâm Phu village in Giao Phong commune, Giao Thuy district, northern Nam Dinh province, has also achieved the status of a new rural smart zone. The village is equipped with security cameras and up to 80% of local households have been given access to the Internet.

Vinh Hung commune in Phu Lôc district, central Thua Thien-Hue province, is another locality selected to pilot the smart commune model, where all administrative procedures have been digitized.

According to the director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thua Thien-Hue province, Nguyen Dinh Duc, digital transformation is seen as a solution to build ecological and efficient agriculture, as well as modern and smart rural areas.

The Department of Information and Communications of Nam Dinh Province has been tasked with accelerating the digital transformation of localities, with the goal of 184 communes being recognized as advanced rural areas and at least 20 others recognized as new exemplary rural areas by 2023.

Under the said national program, at least 80% of the country's communes should win the title of new rural area by 2025.

Notably, the average income of rural residents will increase by at least 1.5 times compared to 2020.
