France/Twinning committee of Carcassonne reactivates the flame of Franco-German friendship
2023 will be rich in anniversaries for the Carcassonne twinning committee. The association will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its creation and the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty sealing the Franco-German friendship and the post-war wave of Franco-German twinning.
If there is an Eggenfelden square in Carcassonne, there is also a Carcassonne Platz in Eggenfelden, a town of 15,000 inhabitants in lower Bavaria, 90 km from Munich. And it has been going on for almost 50 years. After a long interruption due to the sanitary conditions linked to the Covid-19, the twinning life has resumed in 2022. A delegation of Carcassonnais went to Germany at the beginning of December.
A week rich in renewed friendships, joint work to prepare the 50th anniversary of the twinning, visits, exchanges, new educational and sports contacts, without forgetting theThe Christmas market in Eggenfelden was inaugurated, which in the purest Bavarian tradition is called "Christkindlmarkt" (market of the baby Jesus). In these troubled times, the mayors of the two cities and the German and French presidents of the twinning committees reaffirmed the vital importance of the Franco-German link.
A school exchange planned for February 2023
The people of Carcassonne met with representatives of the soccer and handball clubs of Eggenfelden, visited a high school and talked with the students, and presented gifts from the city hall of Carcassonne, all to prepare new links between the two cities. High school students from Eggenfelden will come to Carcassonne in February.
2023 will also be an important year for the Franco-German friendship, as both sides of the border will celebrate 60 years of friendship.the 60th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, signed by General de Gaulle and Chancellor Adenauer. It is in this context that the Carcassonne twinning committee will propose a conference at the Odeum on January 20, on the theme of post-war technological cooperation which made the greatness of the Franco-German "tandem". Olivier Mettery, an electronics engineer, has spent his career in the aeronautics industry.
He will share his views on German and French inventions and innovations, which combined rather than opposed, have changed the world since the post-war period.
