Morocco/Fishing in Safi: the value of products marketed is increasing
The products of coastal and artisanal fisheries marketed at the port of Safi and the landing point (PDA) of Souiria Kdima have recorded during the first quarter of the year 2022, an increase of 8% in value compared to the same period last year.
According to data from the National Fisheries Office (ONP), seafood products marketed at the port of Safi have recorded at the end of March 2022, a decline of 6% in value (89.047 million DH) and 16% by weight (11.089 tons), while at the PDA Souiria Kdima, these products have shown a growth of 14% in value (23.033 MDH) and 91% in weight (570 tons) compared to the same period last year.
During the first quarter of 2022, the catches of pelagic fish recorded at the level of the port of Safi, a decrease of 31% in value (29.298 MDH) and 20% in weight with (9,660 T), against respectively 42.306 MDH in value for 12.113 tons during the same period of 2021, says the ONP, noting that at the level of the PDA of Souiria Kdima, the catches of pelagic fish have shown an evolution of 72% in value (36.000 DH) and 85% in weight (5 tons) and this, compared to the same period last year (21,000 DH in value) and (3 tons in weight).
The quantity of white fish catches has shown, for its part, an increase of 9% in value (14.519 MDH) and 8% in weight (407 T) at the port of Safi. The same upward trend was recorded at the Souiria Kdima PDA, with 95% in value of the quantity of white fish catches (2.435 million dinars) and 68% in weight (67 tons).
The catches of cephalopods showed an evolution of 10% in value (42.021 million dirhams) and 7% in weight (572 tons) at the level of the port of Safi, while at the level of the PDA of Souiria Kdima, the catches of cephalopods recorded a growth of 2% in value (19.359 million dirhams) and a decrease of 19% in weight (208 tons).
At the level of the port of Safi, the catches of crustaceans have shown, for their part, an increase of 105% in terms of value (1.52 MDH) and a decrease of 17% in weight (28 T), while at the level of the PDA of Souiria Kdima, these catches have recorded a rise of 181% in value (42,000 DH) and 165% in weight.
The fishing port of Safi is one of the most dynamic points of marketing of seafood in Morocco.
As for the fishing sector, it is a pillar of the local economy, as it provides more than 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.
