The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board today approved the Olympism 365 strategy. The strategy aims to strengthen the role of sport as an important partner in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to share the Olympic values everywhere, every day.

Olympism 365 will be the driving force behind the implementation of Recommendation 10 ofthe Olympic Agenda 2020+5, which commits to strengthening the role of sport as an important partner in the achievement of the UN SDGs. With this strategy, the IOC reaffirms its commitment to use the momentum created by the Olympic Games to promote the Olympic values and the role of sport in society 365 days a year.

Olympism 365 applies the Fundamental Principles of Olympism and aligns with local aid investment plans, development plans and other initiatives that are aligned with the SDGs. Through its impact on access to sport, community ownership, benefits of sport and connection, Olympism 365 directly addresses 17 targets under ten SDGs.

The relevant SDGs and targets are

  • SDG 3 Good health and well-being (target 3.4)
  • MDG 4 Quality education (targets 4.4 and 4.5)
  • MDG 5 Gender equality (targets 5.1, 5.2 and 5.5)
  • SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth (Targets 8.3 and 8.6)
  • MDG 10 Reduce inequalities within and between countries (Target 10.3)
  • SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities (target 11.7)
  • SDG 12 Sustainable consumption and production patterns (target 12.5)
  • SDG 13 Take urgent action to address climate change (target 13.2)
  • SDG 16 Peace, justice and effective institutions (targets 16.2 and 16.7)
  • SDG 17 Partnerships to achieve the goals (targets 17.3, 17.14 and 17.16)

The Olympism 365 strategy builds on the progress made by the IOC and its partners over the past 20 years to contribute to a peaceful and better world through sport. It also reaffirms the Olympic Movement's ambition to remain relevant to the current global context, marked by the VOCID-19 pandemic.

"Sport is of enormous social importance as the glue that binds communities together," said IOC President Thomas Bach. "The Olympic values that are enshrined in the Olympic Charter and that guide the work of our Movement are more relevant than ever. They come alive not just during the Olympic Games, but every day, everywhere. It is our duty to ensure that governments and the entire international community continue to invest in sport and its irreplaceable values. With the adoption of the Olympism 365 strategy, we will create and strengthen partnerships that will enable us to contribute more to building a better world through sport, together," concluded President Thomas Bach.

The importance of sport and its values was demonstrated more than ever during the VID-19 pandemic. Sport played a vital role in helping people to stay physically and mentally healthy during this difficult period. Governments, UN agencies, development banks, NGOs and other commercial organisations all recognise that sport can be a driver for social change. The Olympism 365 strategy will aim to build innovative and effective partnerships using sport to impact people's lives across all spheres of society, including education, health and inclusion.

Olympism 365 will aim to create change in four interrelated areas:

  • Improvingaccess tosport: Olympism 365 will bring together and leverage a network of diverse partners to create new opportunities for disadvantaged communities to participate in sport;
  • Creating a place ofbelonging: Through innovative partnerships, Olympism 365 will create safe, inclusive and equal sport communities;
  • Provide opportunities to reap the fullbenefits of sport: Olympism 365 will seek to harness the full power of sport, including its effects on physical and mental wellbeing, but also the new opportunities offered in relation to employability, such as networking and leadership development; and
  • Strengthening local and globalconnections: Olympism 365 will enable diverse groups of people and organisations to connect, share best practices and experiences, and collectively solve problems.

In order to achieve these goals, Olympism 365 will follow four working principles:

  • Quality delivery and advocacypartnershipsare essential to the implementation of the strategy;
  • The approachwill take into account the ongoing impact of the VOCID-19 pandemic;
  • Safe, inclusive, accessible and sustainable organisations are a prerequisite for greater equality of opportunity;
  • Sustainable environmental, social and economic practices based on respect for human rights are applied in all processes.

Over the next four years, Olympism 365 will aim to build eight portfolios of cross-cutting initiatives and projects encompassing over 45 strategic partners and over 200 implementing partners. Each portfolio may include stakeholders from the Olympic Movement, athletes, NGOs, TOP partners, young leaders, government bodies, UN and development agencies, and programme implementing organisations.
