Ghana

Ghana's first private cement plant, Dzata Cement, owned by businessman, Ibrahim Mahama, has come into being and is continuing to set up in Tema in the country to stabilise domestic production and make prices competitive. Dzata is the local name for the lion.

Ghana's Trade Minister, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, visited the Dzata Cement site near the Port of Tema on May 10. He expressed confidence in the ability of Ghanaians to take charge of the national economy. Ghanaians were urged to consume Dzata for the growth of the national economy.

Annual production in sight

The production of Dzata cement will help stabilise the demand and supply of cement in Ghana. The company expects to produce about three million tonnes of cement annually for the Ghanaian and African markets once it is fully operational.

The plant has the capacity to produce an average of 120 bags per minute from two production lines. The cement produced is ordinary Portland cement. The technology used to produce Dzata cement comes from Germany and was developed by Haver and Boecker.

Competitive price to come

The price of a 50 kg bag of cement has increased because the company Ghacem has increased the price to 50 GHC, which is about 4,800 CFA francs.

The price of Dzata cement produced by a Ghanaian will certainly challenge the current market price. A new package of cement is about to be put on the market, it is the Dzata cement, 50 Kg. The Dzata Cement factory, will sell a bag of cement at a much lower and competitive price when production for sales starts in June. Cement is a substance used for the construction of hard houses.

With over $100 million invested in the Dzata Cement plant, owner Ibrahim Mahama, younger brother of former Ghanaian President John Mahama, is set to produce cement for the Ghanaian market and even outside. He has a vision to stabilise the demand and supply of cement in the country.

In Ghana, the existing cement plants include GHACEM, Dangote Cement Ghana, CIMAF, Diamond, Scancem International, Xin An Safe Cement, Wan Heng Ghana, Continental Blue Investment and Savannah Cement.

The country is one of the many African countries that manufacture cement for commercial purposes. Its local manufacturers have the capacity to produce about 7.4 million tonnes of cement per year, which is 2.4 million tonnes more than the annual consumption in Ghana. However, the local industry faces stiff competition as hundreds of thousands of tonnes of bagged cement are imported into the country every year.
