Togo: towards a structured sanitation sector
In Togo, sanitation stakeholders want to structure their sector further. Through their organization, the Association des Acteurs de l'Assainissement du Togo (3AT), they discussed the challenges and prospects of the sector with the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Mawunyo Mila Aziable, last week.
At a hearing on March 7, 2025, they presented the Minister with challenges such as the absence of sludge treatment plants, the lack of suitable infrastructure for unloading and the obsolescence of equipment. In addition to hampering the sector's efficiency, these constraints generate additional costs for operators and compromise urban sanitation, a major issue for public health and the environment.
"Your contribution is crucial. The government is listening and will support your initiatives to step up action in the field", reassured the minister.
Public initiatives include the Projet de Promotion de l'Assainissement Inclusif des Centres Urbains au Togo (PAICUT) and the Projet d'Amélioration de la Sécurité Hydrique en Milieu Urbain (PASH-MUT), which aim to improve the management of faecal sludge and strengthen the sanitation value chain.
Transforming the sector
With a regulatory framework to be consolidated and financing in the process of being mobilized, sanitation could become a growth lever for local operators, we report.
For example, effective structuring would offer not only economic opportunities, but also a healthier living environment for urban populations. The challenge remains to accelerate this transformation for the benefit of the sector.
