Togo: new regulations for the forestry sector
Togo is moving towards new regulations in the forestry sector. Last week, players in the sector met in Lomé (from April 24 to 25, 2025) to validate the revised preliminary draft law on the forestry code.
Spearheaded by the Ministry of the Environment and Forest Resources (MERF), the initiative aims to bring national regulations into line with international sustainable management standards and the requirements of multilateral agreements to which Togo is a party.
For the ministerial department, this reform is part of the government's 2020-2025 roadmap, specifically its " reform 6 " relating to the modernization of environmental legislation.
At the end of the work, 140 articles were reformulated, 13 deleted, and 33 new articles created, bringing the future text to 173 articles, compared with 160 for the previous law of 2008.
" The aim is to adapt our legislative framework to the new paradigms of environmental preservation and sustainable development ", said Col. Koffi Dimizou, Secretary General of MERF, at the opening ceremony.
The validated text will now be forwarded to the General Secretariat of the Government for the rest of the legislative process, until its final adoption by the National Assembly.
Ultimately, this reform should strengthen national forest governance, better protect ecosystems and support the country's climate ambitions.
A few weeks earlier, the National Assembly had already adopted a new law to combat climate change.
