Togo

The Togolese government has just launched a census of economic entities involved in the social and solidarity economy (SSE). Spearheaded by the Ministry of Grassroots Development and the Social Solidarity Economy, the operation is designed to map the structures active throughout the country.

In practical terms, the aim is to build up a database to improve knowledge of the sector. Cooperatives, mutuals, economic associations and community groups are invited to fill in a form made available online.

According to the Ministry, the information gathered will be used to better guide public policy, strengthen existing support systems and identify the needs of stakeholders. The census is also intended to pave the way for future consultations between public authorities and sector organizations on issues of structuring, financing and business development.

In Togo, the social/solidarity-based economy is particularly active in agriculture, crafts, agri-food processing, services and inclusive finance. The sector contributes to income generation and the economic integration of populations, particularly women and young people.
