Vietnam/Children participate in environmental protection
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 88% of diseases caused by pollution and climate change occur in children under 5 years old. Educating children to protect the environment and listening to their views on this subject is the guarantee for the future of our planet.
In Vietnam in 2022, many children expressed their views on environmental issues by participating in the 51st International Letter-writing Competition. Organized by the Universal Postal Union (UPU), the theme of the contest was "Write a letter to an influential person to explain why and how they should act on climate change."
This was the 34th time the contest was held in Vietnam. Nearly one million letters were sent in by Vietnamese children. Schoolboy Nguyen Binh Nguyen, from Nguyen Tri Phuong School, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, won the only first prize with his touching letter sent to pianist Dang Thai Son. In her letter, Binh Nguyen turns into a small wind that flies to Canada, asking the Vietnamese-born pianist to use music to spread the message of protecting the green planet.
At the ceremony held on May 9 in Hanoi to award the prizes of the 51st International Letter-writing Competition, Dr. Luong Quang Huy from the office of the National Committee on Climate Change, said that many children had conveyed their environmental protection messages in their own way.
The solutions they propose are all possible if influential people trust young citizens, he stressed, before expressing his optimism on environmental issues, as the country's future owners are seriously concerned about them.
For years, the Ministry of Education and Training has ordered the inclusion of environmental issues in the curriculum at all levels. At the same time, many activities have been organized by several other ministries and organizations, including UNICEF Vietnam, to raise children's awareness of the response to climate change.
Through these efforts, students and teachers are more aware of the importance of environmental protection. They then become communicators to encourage others to engage in concrete protective actions, including the use of environmentally friendly products.
