Togo/Togolese and Burkina Faso tax authorities plan to cooperate
Togo and Burkina Faso are planning to extend their cooperation to the tax field, building on existing links in customs matters. This project was discussed earlier this week in Lomé at a meeting between the Commissioner General of the Office Togolais des Recettes (OTR), Philippe Tchodie, and the Director of Taxes for Burkina Faso, Eliane Djiguemde-Ouedraogo, who is also Chairman of the Board of the Forum des Administrations Fiscales Ouest-Africaines (FAFOA).
At this meeting, the modalities of a partnership in the tax field were explored, with particular emphasis on technical support for the OTR in the realization of certain strategic projects in Burkina Faso. In this context, the two administrations noted the need to harmonize tax systems in the sub-region.
In the long term, this partnership would strengthen their countries' tax mechanisms through the sharing of expertise and the adoption of best practices, in a context where globalization requires cooperation between States to optimize revenue mobilization and effectively combat tax evasion.
According to OTR General Commissioner Philippe Tchodie, "no country can be self-sufficient in a context of globalization of tax systems ".
This tax rapprochement between Togo and Burkina Faso could also strengthen their trade relations, as Burkina Faso is one of Togo's leading economic partners. According to the Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques et démographiques (INSEED), Burkina Faso was Togo's second-largest customer in the fourth quarter of 2023, accounting for 8.4% of its exports.
