Switzerland/Medication dosing for children is progressing in Switzerland
The SwissPedDose association, created by the Swiss government, continues to improve dosages for children. The national database now includes adapted dosage recommendations for the most common substances.
The national database on the dosage of medicines for children, called SwissPedDose, has met expectations after its first phase of operation, the FOPH wrote on Monday. At the end of 2021, it contained more than 460 dosage recommendations. The latter covered the 134 most common active substances, which should satisfy healthcare professionals.
The dosage of drugs in children is a complex task. It is the source of most errors in pediatrics, the release notes. As there are not yet enough medicines developed specifically for children, health professionals are often forced to adapt their use to the child's age and body mass.
Wide range
The results of the first phase of the project show the importance of these data, according to the FOPH, for fields as varied as infectious diseases, diabetes, and diabetes.infectious diseases, anesthesia, neonatology, intensive care medicine and general pediatrics. The development will continue in 2022, with the launch of the second phase of operations, which will be open to practical pediatrics, pharmacy and psychiatry.
The SwissPedDose association was founded by the eight A-region pediatric clinics (Aarau, Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Lucerne, St. Gallen, St. Gallen and St. Gallen).ve, Lausanne, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Zurich), the Swiss Pediatric Society and the Swiss Society of Administrative and Hospital Pharmacists. For the years 2018 to 2025, the federal government has granted 3.4 million francs for the operation of the registry.
In parallel to this project, the state has taken other measures to improve the safety of children's medication. These include incentives for the pharmaceutical industry to develop more medicines for children.
