Senegal/Rufisque: World Theatre Day celebrated at the women's prison
The "Fam" theater company, led by actor and director Ibrahima Mbaye dit "Sopé", celebrated World Theater Day on Thursday with inmates from the Rufisque women's prison.
She offered a show and moments of sharing to the residents, fulfilling her mission dedicated to fighting violence against women.
"My main objective has always been to put a smile back on women's faces. Today, on March 27 [World Theatre Day], I'm happy to be here to celebrate theater with them," he declared. True to his commitment, the artist, who regularly performs in prisons, encouraged inmates to take part in theatrical activities.
"We come here every year, and beyond performing for them, we involve them in our creations. My dream is to one day see theater troupes formed in every prison to help women pull themselves together and reintegrate into society," he confided.
Beyond entertainment, the actor recalled the fundamental missions of theater: to inform, raise awareness and denounce the evils that plague society.
"Theater isn't just about film or video. It has a powerful role to play in social construction", he asserted, calling for greater recognition of this discipline.
This celebration was marked by artistic performances, with the participation of other actors and religious singers, before an enthusiastic audience.
Gifts were also presented to the inmates, making the day even more special.
