Some 314 patients from the Saloum islands were given free consultations in gastrology, ophthalmology, cardiology and general medicine at Dionewar by various medical specialists, APS learned from the organizers on Wednesday.

"We received 314 patients, including 277 for general medicine and 37 for dental care," said Mamadou Sarr, one of the organizers of the consultation day and a doctoral student in the Faculty of Medicine at Dakar's Cheikh Anta Diop University.

He pointed out that the most frequent pathologies recorded during the consultation day were gastric and pediatric.

"The head nurses (ICP) are responsible for ensuring the medical follow-up of patients diagnosed with pathologies," added Mr. Sarr. Sarr, adding that "urgent cases" were referred to higher-level health structures.

The doctor pointed out that the island of Dionewar, like the other Saloum islands, is only accessible by pirogue. "This means that islanders still struggle to benefit from specialist health care. It was therefore important to initiate such a day for the islanders", he maintained.
