Morocco/Berkane: Multidisciplinary medical caravan for prisoners

On Sunday in Berkane, the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Rehabilitation of Prisoners organized a multidisciplinary medical caravan for residents of the local prison.

This initiative, organized in partnership with the local prison administration, the regional delegation of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection in Berkane and civil society organizations, is part of the interest shown by this institution in the health of the prison population. The medical caravan, which took place under the motto: "Towards strengthening health provision in prisons in support of rehabilitation programs", targeted over 1.000 male and female inmates, who benefited from free medical examinations, analyses and medicines.

The caravan, supervised by a team of 47 medical and paramedical staff, included several specialties including ophthalmology, dermatology, cardiovascular diseases, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, diabetes and ENT.

In a statement to MAP, Abdelhalim Miri, regional coordinator of the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Reinsertion of Prisoners in the Oriental Region, said that this initiative was part of the strategy adopted by the Foundation for the Reinsertion of Prisoners in the Oriental Region.This initiative is part of the Foundation's strategy to strengthen health care provision in prisons and bring medical services closer to inmates.

For his part, Ali Ouahabi, Director of the local Berkane prison, emphasized that this initiative was part of the drive to improve the health services provided to inmates in penal establishments, including the local prison.The caravan, which covered a number of specialties, enabled this category of the population to benefit from free medical examinations and medicines.
