Haiti - Agriculture : Mexico seeks to contribute to the recovery of the agricultural sector in Haiti

As part of the preparation of a technical cooperation plan to strengthen agribusiness production in Haiti, the head of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development in Mexico, Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, affirmed his willingness to collaborate with the Haitian authorities to promote projects for the cultivation of vegetables, production of basic grains and planting of fruit trees to strengthen food security in Haiti.

He emphasized that Mexico seeks to provide technical assistance, train specialists from public agencies and implement programs for the availability of seeds, supplies and agricultural equipment. He is confident that with the support of the foreign ministries of both countries, it will be possible to build on the successful experiences of Mexico and Haiti and to initiate studies on how to improve the quality of life in Haiti.Haiti and initiate soil surveys, prepare areas and look into the possibility of renting or donating machinery and taking advantage of the short seasonal rain cycles

In addition, options will be explored to support agriculture in Haiti with technical assistance from other international actors such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

Among the objectives are the installation of fruit tree and vegetable nurseries for planting with irrigation systems and for commercial purposes. Increasing the cultivation of local products such as cassava, bananas, mangoes and tubers, as well as beans, chickpeas and fodder corn for raising small livestock, such as goats, sheep and pigs.

Micro-basins will also be promoted, made of stone gabions to catch and use rainwater. Soil improvement, compost management for nurseries will be done through plant waste from public markets, as well as the collection of organic materials and a mixture of organic and inorganic materials.He said that one of the main objectives of the project is to improve the quality of life of the people who live in the area.
