France/ Breton association questions its commitment to Burkina Faso
In Plougastel-Daoulas (Finistère), the situation in Burkina Faso has raised questions among members of the Arpom association about the continuity of support for various projects.
At its general meeting on September 22, 2023, the association Aide aux ruraux des Pays d'Outre Mer (Arpom) took stock of its activities in Burkina Faso. Lionel Houée, President of Arpom, highlights the increasingly deteriorating security situation in the country. It is impossible for French nationals to travel there. Visas are no longer issued in either direction, but the association is determined to continue sponsoring children. In June, we were sponsoring 110 Burkinabe schoolchildren. It will be difficult to do better with the drop in the number of sponsors. The situation does not encourage sponsorship and raises questions about our commitment.
Developing access to water
The well providing access to drinking water in Didyr, which Arpom financed, needs to be redeveloped. It is 300 meters from the houses. That's too far. We're planning an electric pump powered by photovoltaic panels to fill a water tower and redistribute the water as close as possible to the inhabitants. As this is a private project, we should avoid any complications with the public authorities.
Partnerships with other countries and associations
Taking into account the situation in Burkina Faso, the action to be developed is to be more present in other countries by forging links with associations or individuals already well established", concludes Lionel Houée.
