France/Betton. Twenty years of twinning with Barberino di Mugello
Last Friday, the twinning committee and town council welcomed their counterparts from Barberino di Mugello (Tuscany, Italy) to renew the signing of the twinning charter, now in its 20th year.
As early as 2002, the town of Betton had expressed its desire to build a relationship with a town of Mediterranean culture. Exchanges had been launched with Ferrate, but the choice fell on a town of similar size, Barberino di Mugello, which, for its part, wanted a French town for its first twinning.
Twelve young Italians and seventeen adults had been in the commune for the occasion, and the new mayor of Barberino di Mugello, Sara di Maio, freshly elected onelected on June 9, was in Betton for two days to celebrate 20 years of twinning with her town.
Michel Gautier and Giampiero Lucchi, the mayors behind the twinning, recalled anecdotes from the first meetings, including the misunderstanding over the size of the two towns' lakes, with Barberino di Mugello benefiting from the 5 km² Di Balancino lake.
All gathered for a shared meal at Confluence.
