Diplomacy: Benin and Slovenia seal historic agreement

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Olushegun Adjadi BAKARI received this Monday, April 07, 2025, his Slovenian counterpart, Mrs. Tanja FAJON. The meeting was part of a working visit to Benin by the Slovenian head of diplomacy. At the end of the exchanges, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political and diplomatic consultations.

Arriving in Cotonou on Sunday, Slovenia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Tanja FAJON, held talks with her Beninese counterpart, Mr Olushegun Adjadi BAKARI, on Monday April 07, 2025. During the audience, the two ministers discussed the state of relations between their countries, and the prospects for strengthening them. To further consolidate their ties, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on political and diplomatic consultations. A first between Cotonou and Ljubljana.

Through the document, Benin and Slovenia express their desire to further strengthen bilateral relations by establishing a mechanism for political consultations. The parties will hold regular consultations and discussions to review the development of bilateral relations between the two countries and exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest.

At the end of an extended meeting attended by delegations from both sides, Slovenia's Foreign Ministernia expressed her satisfaction at the rapprochement between Benin and Slovenia and the positive development of their relations. Tanja FAJON also underlined the significance of the agreements signed in Cotonou.

Benin: A strategic partner in West Africa

Tanja FAJON is also Deputy Prime Minister of the European Union. In this capacity, she spoke of the partnership between Benin and the EU. According to the Deputy Head of European Diplomacy, "Benin is a strategic partner in West Africa". This is why Brussels intends to further strengthen its ties with Cotonou in various fields, including security, and to support its progress towards development.

The Deputy Prime Minister concluded by expressing her enthusiasm for Benin's return to the next EU-Africa summit.
