Chad/Towards sustainable development: Chad adopts a circular economy strategy
Under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment, Fisheries and Development, a technical validation workshop for the circular economy process roadmap was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel from February 25 to 26, 2025.
The aim of the meeting was to examine the document from a technical point of view, with a view to making it relevant and operational, in accordance with the regulatory texts in force in Chad.
Towards a sustainable economic model
Opening the proceedings, the Secretary General of the Ministry of the Environment, Fisheries and Development, Mr. Koularambaye Koundja Julien, reminded the audience that "the sustainable development of the environment is an essential element of any sustainable development strategy". Koularambaye Koundja Julien, recalled that "the circular economy consists in producing goods and services in a sustainable manner, by limiting the consumption and wastage of resources and the production of waste. It's about moving from a throwaway society to a circular economic model. "
According to him, this approach is in line with the vision of the African Union, which has given a key place to the circular economy, adopted by member countries in November 2023. He also pointed out that this continental plan responds to the recommendations of the African Union's third Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on agriculture, rural development, the environment and sustainable development.agriculture, rural development, water and the environment, as well as those of the 17ᵉ session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN). These bodies recognized the importance of the circular economy, leading in 2020 to the establishment of an expert working group that drew up a continental action plan adopted in 2023.
Chad's commitment to the circular economy
Within this framework, Chad, with the support of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has embarked on the process of drawing up its own roadmap for the circular economy. Mr. Koularambaye Koundja Julien pointed out that Article 51 of the Constitution of the 5ᵉ Republic of Chad guarantees everyone the right to a healthy environment, while Article 57 makes environmental protection a duty for all.
Finally, he encouraged the participants to invest themselves fully in this workshop and praised the commitment of the experts for their valuable contributions in favor of environmental protection.
