Canada/Gaspé aims to develop sustainable tourism
The Town of Gaspé launches a four-season Sustainable Destination Strategy to diversify its tourism offering, protect the environment and improve local quality of life. The plan includes transportation, awareness-raising and fund-raising.
On Monday, the Town of Gaspé unveiled its first Four-Season Sustainable Destination Strategy, which focuses on four priority areas. These include diversifying the offering, including outside the high season. For example, by encouraging business and event tourism. Other priorities include developing active and public transportation, and protecting the natural environment.
"When we talk about sustainability, we're also talking about the fact that the tourism elements we're working on also contribute to the quality of life of our citizens. As does the question of transportation, which necessarily comes with it. Because our main challenge here is the remoteness of large populations. If we want to attract people, we also need transport. If we do it for tourists, it's also good for our citizens. "says Daniel Côté, mayor of Gaspé.
This plan follows on from a citizen consultation held in 2024. More than 1,200 citizens, some 20 tourism stakeholders and 127 participants in public meetings helped develop a strategy for the destination.
"We're probably going to make them aware so that they can make their customers aware of waste management and our drinking water protection strategy as well. In short, they'll be able to help us in all these areas. "he adds.
A follow-up committee will oversee implementation of the action plan, while the city will seek funding for priority projects.
