The New Brunswick government has amended the Nursing Homes Act to reduce hospital overcrowding and speed up access to appropriate care.

The amendments authorize the Minister of Social Development to interrupt the normal waiting list process when the situation becomes critical.

The Minister will be able to intervene when the occupancy rate of hospital beds has exceeded 95% for 7 days, and more than a quarter of these beds are occupied by patients requiring more extensive care.

The ministry will also be able to prioritize the admission to nursing homes of people whose health represents an exceptional risk.
