Sherbrooke resident Jean-Claude Thibault can't bring himself to throw his organic waste in the garbage can. Every week, he walks ten minutes or so with his compost bin in hand, and goes to a friend's house to dispose of its contents.

He appeared before city council on Tuesday evening to call for mandatory organics collection for all multi-unit dwellings. Currently, in Sherbrooke, buildings with six or more units are exempt.

We're asking the city to speed up the process of establishing regulations that would allow owners and tenants to separate their organic matter from their garbage," says Jean-Claude Thibault.

Along with other residents of his apartment building, he has formed a pro-compost citizens' committee.

We were brought up to recycle. Now we're into compost. It's natural, but now it's time to move on to the next stage: taking action," explains another committee member, André Thibault.

Sherbrooke Mayor Évelyne Beaudin assures us that their request has been heard and that discussions are underway.

I felt that all the members of the municipal council were ready to move towards something more ambitious," she says.

The extension of collection will not take place before 2026.

I think that for people of my generation, we'd feel less at fault if we left something like that to those who come after us.
