The 100-unit affordable housing complex for independent seniors will be built in the Grand-Mère sector.

The City of Shawinigan has confirmed that it has ceded land on 25th Street, near Auberge La Rocaille, free of charge to Mission Unitaînés, which is responsible for the project.

The organization intends to build 10 buildings with 100 apartments each for Quebec's less affluent seniors.

The Quebec government, a partner in the project, announced this provincial project in Shawinigan last February.

The Shawinigan building was scheduled to welcome its first occupants in the summer of 2026. It is expected to include some 75 one-bedroom units, 15 studios and a dozen two-bedroom units.

Construction is scheduled to start in early August, according to Mission Unitaînés. An official ground-breaking ceremony will be held to mark the start of construction.
