The Departmental Directorate of the Republican Police of Couffo (DDPR-Couffo), in collaboration with the Public Prosecutor's Office of Aplahoue and the National Centre for Road Safety (CNSR), under the aegis of Prefect Christophe Mègbédji, organised on Thursday, at the Azovè bus station, an awareness session for drivers of all types of vehicles on the road code, in the presence of the commissioners of the various districts of the town of Aplahoué and the representative of the mayor, Maxime Allossogbé.

According to Senior Police Commissioner Seraphin Lossikindé, Departmental Director of the Republican Police, the statistics of traffic accidents in the department of Couffo are becoming more and more worrying. These accidents recorded on the roads in the department for him, are often due to the non respect of the highway code.

To reduce the phenomenon and bring the drivers to a change of behavior, the departmental direction of the Republican Police of Couffo and the actors involved in the road code have indicated to the drivers the behavior to hold on the roads through the awareness session.

The representative of the Director General of CNSR, Georges Anagonou, said he was satisfied with the role played by local authorities to reduce the number of traffic accidents in Benin. He also announced that after this sensitization phase, the repressive phase will follow to force stubborn drivers to respect the road rules.

After deploring the number of accidents recorded every week in the department, the prosecutor of the court of Aplahoué, Aristide Fadé, informed that most of the machines on the roads are in permanent technical failure. He therefore invited drivers to observe the rules of the highway code in order to be safe from the texts that govern cases of accidents in the Republic of Benin. Aristide Fadé, told the drivers present at the meeting that any author of an accident in the department will henceforth answer for his act. "Zero tolerance for accidents," he added.

The prefect Christophe Mègbédji, for his part, urged drivers to rigorously respect the highway code in order not to fall under the law.
