Belgium/Hainaut: workers mobilize for first provincial day of action
Regional and provincial actions were organized this Thursday February 5 in Hainaut, as provided for in the national trade union common front action plan. They follow on from the January 25 demonstration in Brussels, which drew 10,000 people into the streets.
Strike action was taken in many companies. Two awareness-raising actions have also been organized since 7:00 a.m. at the Pont-Canal traffic circle in Jemappes and at the Grands Prés site in Mons, as well as at the Point d'Eau traffic circle near the Centre station in La Louvière. "We'll be handing out a carabiner to motorists, symbolizing the fact that everyone is part of a chain against government measures, as well as a leaflet inviting them to the national demonstration on March 12," explained Marie Marlier (CSC). "Our common front action on Thursday has sparked a major mobilization of workers, particularly in companies where pickets, assemblies and other actions are being organized." "Under pressure from union actions, changes have been made to the government's measures," the CSC points out in a statement. "We have succeeded in saving end-of-career jobs, periods of temporary unemployment and sickness will finally be taken into account for pension purposes, and the first year of a career will also be taken into account for pension calculations. "
The union regrets, however, that "Arizona persists in making the working world pay for the crisis by imposing chilling measures", such as, in particular, "working longer for a smaller pension, theThese include " working longer for less pension , imposing flexibility in the workplace, increasingly precarious status, uncertain schedules, frozen wages, and targeting the long-term sick and unemployed".
For the union, there are "alternatives, but the government doesn't want to hear them".
