Belgium/Day center for disabled people inaugurated in Malmedy
This weekend, in the hamlet of Cligneval in Malmedy, ASBL Cadre inaugurated their new day center for people with disabilities. A center that had been awaited for 20 years. A relief for beneficiaries and volunteers alike, who can now enjoy real comfort.
"I'm glad it's finally here," says Cédric, who makes no secret of his delight. He has been a beneficiary of ASBL Cadre for seven years. Until a few days ago, he had to make do with containers. "The old building was much smaller. Now he can enjoy a new 500 square meter building for thirteen beneficiaries.
It took 20 years of fund-raising before the center saw the light of day. "It took a long time because the building cost 2 million euros. We didn't have the 2 million euros. What finally enabled us to speed things up was that we got approval from the AVIQ for everything to do with the operation, i.e. payment of the workers and the maintenance.-Gauthier Lemaître, president of ASBL Cadre, explains. There was no longer any need to finance these operations from our own funds. That's how the new building came into being.
Including disabled people in society
The ASBL's objective remains the same: to include disabled people in society. "This is an educational farm. We're trying to be able to grow their market garden produce, process their products, sell them and ultimately operate during the day as a completely normal business," explains the association's president.
In the coming months, several projects are set to see the light of day. These will not only finance the activities of the beneficiaries, but also pay for the construction of the center.
