Belgium/Three times more cyclists in 15 years: Bruxelles environnement publishes its annual report
The acceleration of the ecological and social transition is at the heart of Brussels Environment's 2025 annual report, published on Tuesday. The body highlights the progress made in climate transition, energy renovation, sustainable mobility and biodiversity preservation, with the ambition of moving towards carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Brussels Social Climate Plan is one of the main projects launched by Brussels Environment last year. Drawn up after extensive consultation with some sixty Brussels stakeholders, the plan aims to protect the most vulnerable households from future energy and fuel price rises. A budget of 232 million euros was released in October 2025 to roll out support measures for the most vulnerable households and micro-businesses. The final version of the plan will be adopted during 2026.
The European Be. SHARE, a low-temperature heating and cooling network launched in October in the North district, will supply offices and housing, including 201 low-income households, from 2029.The project has received European funding of +/- 5 million euros out of a total budget of 6.25 million euros.
On the subject of mobility, Brussels Environment reports that, in 20 years, the proportion of workers in Brussels has fallen from 4 out of 10 to 2 out of 10 today. The proportion of cyclists has tripled since 2011. On the other hand, commuters now generate the majority of car journeys.
The rate of preparation for reuse and recycling of business waste has risen from 31% in 2018 to 40% in 2023. The aim is to reach 60% by 2030.
