Maria Soledad Gomez and María Pía Rossomando Ramírez, doctoral students at the National University of Cuyo (Argentina), recently spent three months in Montreal (Quebec, Canada), immersed themselves in an international research center and reflected on the place of French in world science.

The researchers carried out an internship at the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie (CIRST) at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) as part of the Mitacs du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) as part of the Mitacs Globalink research grant program, in partnership with the AUF.This internship is part of a project entitled Circulation des connaissances produites en Argentine et au Canada. It examines how knowledge circulates between countries, focusing in particular on linguistic and gender asymmetries, as well as the valorization of multilingualism in scientific production.

At CIRST, Maria Soledad and María Pía have teamed up with sociologists of science who are passionate about these issues. From bibliographic reviews to prosopographical data analysis, the young researchers were fully integrated into the center's dynamic. They have also contributed to the preparation of a scientific workshop in Mendoza, in November 2024, entitled Convergences entre bibliométrie et prosopographie: études sur la couverture, la circulation des connaissances et les inégalités académiques. This collective work has already resulted in several scientific articles, some available in French, and new collaborations between the Argentine and Quebec teams.

"The opportunity for our students to spend time in Montreal as part of CIRST was an important step in their doctoral training and their international openness. The project not only strengthened our ties with Quebec researchers, but also gave rise to new collaborations, joint publications and reciprocal visits," affirmsFernanda Beigel, Professor of Sociology at the National University of Cuyo and Director of the Center for the Study of the Circulation of Knowledge (CECIC) in Mendoza.

For her part, Maria Soledad Gomez describes the experience as "highly commendable", emphasizing how it has enriched her methodological skills and broadened her international perspective.

Thanks to this program, the mobility of young researchers becomes more than a simple exchange. It's a laboratory of ideas where cultures, disciplines and languages come together to bring the French-speaking world of science to life.

The Mitacs Globalink program covers most countries in the world. The internships featured in this article came about thanks to a joint initiative with AUF launched in 2021 to support research and development in French. This partnership provides opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Ukraine and the USA to participate in international research projects in the form of 12-24 week internships.
