France/ Vern-sur-Seiche. Young people and the twinning committee get involved in Europe Day
Notre-Dame schoolchildren met Alain Grégo, President of the Union nationale des combattants, as well as members of the twinning committee and the Schwalbach delegation, at the Volume where the exhibitions were held.
A long-awaited meeting with Schwalbach, as committee chairman Almuth Giraud announced at the start of the year: Markus Weber, Mayor of Schwalbach, had expressed his wish to take part in the May 8 commemorations to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe, but also to be present for the Europe Day festivities on May 9.
He was accompanied by one of his two deputy mayors, Sacha Hoen, as Schwalbach is made up of three villages", explained Almuth Giraud.
The students asked the mayor many questions. They were also very interested in the friendship between the two towns.
The UNC presented an exhibition retracing the major stages leading up to the 1945 victory. A great opportunity to discover or rediscover this key period in our history," emphasized Alain Gréco, president of the UNC. The federation of Franco-German associations presented an exhibition on the 60 years of friendship between the two countries, complete with a treasure hunt and quiz.
Schoolchildren were also involved, with pupils from La Chalotais school working on women in the Resistance, and those from Notre-Dame school on the Resistance in North Africa.
Mayor Stéphane Labbé was pleased with these exchanges: "We spent the day with the twinning committee and the German delegation, to pass on the history of our countries to the younger generation.
