Solidarity fridges will soon be installed in Brest, at the initiative of Mikael Le Borgne. A help that he thinks is precious for many inhabitants.

Mikael Le Borgne sees food waste almost daily in Brest. "I see stuff in the garbage, all wrapped up," sighs the 47-year-old. Involved in the Lambézellec neighborhood house and referent of the shared garden not far from there. "The 10th of the month, for many, is just. People have difficulty filling their fridge, especially at this time with the current economic situation," he says.

This is why he participated in the3rd edition of the Participatory Budget set up by the community to propose the development of solidarity fridges. With success, his project was selected on June 30, along with 18 other initiatives.

Access for all

A solidarity fridge will be set up near the social center of the Lambé neighborhood house, and another in Kérédern. "It will be a small fridge, surrounded by wood. Placed outside, it will be brought in every evening. The inhabitants as well as the shopkeepers will be able to fill it, everyone will be able to have access to it" Inside, "fresh and dry products, fruits and vegetables, pastries".

Each fridge will cost 1,500 euros, and an electrical connection is estimated at 500 euros. The 4,000 euros from the Participatory Budget should be enough to set up the project in early 2023. "We will be helped by the City to carry out this action," says Mikael Le Borgne, who has already approached merchants. Some have agreed to participate in filling the fridge. Others are more cautious. "But everyone welcomes the initiative. We are going to set up a charter, it will be necessary of course that the expiration dates are not exceeded, that there is no alcohol... "

"No shame"

These fridges should also serve to create links between the inhabitants, "the idea is also to make them meet in a different way. You don't have to be afraid of being stigmatized by coming, there is no shame in having trouble filling your fridge."

If the success is there, Mikael Le Borgne imagines a development of these fridges in Brest, with more products, like diapers for children.
