The law of 27 December 2019 on engagement in local life and the proximity of public action provides that mayors and their deputies are recipients of a "tricolour identity card" attesting to their functions.

Until now, there was no unified model, and maps were produced locally by the prefectures in various formats. The cost of the maps was also covered by the municipal budget.

The Ministry of Territorial Cohesion and Relations with Territorial Communities, in partnership with the National Printing Office, has developed a modernised and secure card in a single format. From now on, the card will be provided free of charge to all elected officials who request it. The cost of production and delivery is entirely covered by the State.

This new card is intended for mayors, deputy mayors, mayors of districts in Paris, Lyon and Marseille, as well as delegated mayors of delegated or associated communes.

It will enable them, on a daily basis and in the exercise of their functions, to attest to their status as elected representatives of the Republic. Mayors and their deputies will thus have, throughout the territory, an indisputable means of proving their functions, particularly when they have to manage difficult situations, for example whenThey will be able to demonstrate their duties throughout the country, particularly when they have to manage difficult situations, for example when they go to meet their constituents to resolve a problem or when they have to remind them of the regulations on the public highway.
