Togo/Parliamentary conference on counterterrorism and violent extremism announced in Lomé

From January 19 to 20, 2023, Lomé will host a parliamentary conference on the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. Exchanges during the meeting will focus on finding ways for parliamentarians, youth NGOs and civil society to work together in the fight against terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism.

This meeting, jointly organized by the United Nations Office for Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and the National Assembly of Togo, will mobilize more than 250 participants, including Speakers of Parliament, representatives of national parliaments of African States, youth NGOs and civil society organizations, representatives of United Nations agencies and international organizations.These include Speakers of parliamentary assemblies, representatives of national parliaments of African States, youth NGOs and civil society organizations, representatives of United Nations agencies and international organizations.

These participants will exchange on the recommendations developed by the working group set up following the conference organized in March 2022 in Doha, Qatar by the UNOCT on emerging threats in Africa.

The meeting in Lomé follows that of Doha, while Togo, precisely the north of the country, lives under the threat of terrorism since November 2021 and the authorities are multiplying actions to combat the scourge.

As a reminder, the organization of the meeting in Lome should benefit from the support of the African Parliamentary Union, the Inter-Parliamentary Committee of the G5 Sahel, and the Shura Council of the State of Qatar.
