The Rotary Club, founded in Caen in 1935, chose to donate hydroalcoholic gel to two associations, Revivre and Itinéraires, which help people in great social precariousness.

Interview with Catherine Potel, president of the Rotary Club (RC) Côte de Nacre .

What are your links with the associations Revivre and Itinéraires, to whom you offered, on Wednesday, 500 bottles of hydroalcoholic gel?

Two years ago, we met Jean-François Villette, the president of Revivre, to talk about the many projects he carries out in favour of people in very precarious situations. He made the link with the association Itinéraires, its counterpart in a way for women, chaired by Dominique Devielhe. This is why we thought of them when, at the end of the year, our governor launched a regional solidarity operation thanks to a Covid emergency relief fund, set up by the foundation, and a partnership with a Rouen-based company, Cadactuel. This event is part of one of the six strategic areas defined by the 1,200,000 Rotarians: disease prevention, drinking water, hygiene, help for mothers, education, and peace.

How was the event distributed?

9,500 vials were acquired by clubs with their own funds and grants. 3,500 were delivered to the five clubs in the Calvados West area, which selected the beneficiaries. The operation is aimed at helping the homeless (Homeless), beneficiaries of marauding, migrant, undocumented, underprivileged or in very difficult situations. RC Caen distributed 700 units on seven sites, including Secours catholique, Secours populaire, the Restos du cœur de la Folie-Couvrechef, and the Bétharram Care Centre. The one in Cabourg donates to the Restos du cœur, the CCAS (Communal Centres for Social Action) in Cabourg and Merville, the Ranville food bank, Secours catholique and the Little Brothers of the Poor.

The one in Bayeux distributed 1,000 bottles for the Cornu shelter, which welcomes battered or abandoned women with their children, and two neighbourhood houses: the Argouges and Saint-Jean shelters. The other 6,000 vials target Le Havre, Bayeux, Rouen, Bolbec, Lillebonne, Granville, Avranches, Cherbourg, Saint-Lô and Dieppe.

What is your next operation?

It will take place on June 19 and is called My Blood for Others. It will be a major collection day to raise awareness among new donors, young people, and to bring up the dwindling blood supply.
