Canada/Gatineau to restrict parking on certain narrow streets this winter
Gatineau is tackling snow removal on the narrower streets in its territory. Starting this winter, it will be forbidden to park on one side of certain arteries.
The city launches a pilot project for single-sided winter parking on segments of 30 streets. Effective from December 2024 to March 2025, this new measure will affect a total of 12.79 km of roads.
This number represents approximately 20% of Gatineau's most problematic narrow streets, Ville de Gatineau's communications department points out in an email sent to Radio-Canada.
New road signs reflecting this change are due to be installed in the coming weeks. Among the streets targeted are portions of boulevards Saint-René Est and Saint-René Ouest, as well as chemin de la Savane.

Winter parking permit holders will also have to comply with the new regulations.
Mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette explains that Gatineau wants to optimize its snow clearing operations and that this pilot project will test a new way of doing things from Aylmer to Buckingham. She did not rule out the possibility of extending the measure to other narrow streets across the city.
There are areas where snow removal is more difficult.
A quote from Maude Marquis-Bissonnette, Mayor of Gatineau
The snow removers realize this," she adds. Residents also complain about it, notably through requests to 311. I think we could, after this first year, see how we can extend the project to better meet the needs of residents.
Gatineau has been working on this pilot project for several months. In particular, it had studied an alternating parking system, allowing parking on one side of the street only on certain days.
The municipality points out that obstacle-free streets on one side of the street will make it safer for emergency vehicles and public transit, and improve visibility for road users.
Hull-Wright District Councillor Steve Moran points out that there are challenges everywhere in the city.
The goal [of the pilot project] is to ensure that we can clear snow better and faster," he points out.
