SENEGAL-SANTE-SOCIAL / Sabodala: 300 people consulted free of charge by the Fann geriatric service
More than 300 people from the Sabodala commune and surrounding area, in the southeastern region of Kédougou, have benefited from consultations for general geriatric pathologies, at the initiative of the geriatrics department of the Fann National and University Hospital.
A team from this service visited the Sabodala commune between Friday and Sunday, "to provide medical care for the elderly, as part of a partnership with the mining company Endeavour Mining in Sabodala and its business partner ORICA", explained Professor Mamadou Coumé.a partnership with the Sabodala mining company Endeavour Mining and its business partner ORICA", explained Professor Mamadou Coumé.
The head of the geriatrics department at Fann Hospital assures us that the appropriate measures have been taken by the parties concerned to ensure proper management of all the pathologies detected.
According to Mamadou Coumé, in order to properly implement the strategy agreed six months ago, the mission had first carried out on-site work to identify "all the needs in terms of pathology and medication".
"We are in the process of setting up a pilot program that will bring healthcare closer to the elderly in Sabodala and the surrounding area", announced Dr. Coumé.
He pointed out that these free consultations carried out in Sabodala were part of an assessment of the health of the elderly in the Cédéao space, in 2018, on behalf of the West African Health Organization.
"We are going to shed light on this target [elderly people] thanks to the pilot program, and we really know that elderly people need not only care in specialized health structures, but also care at home," he explained.
Medicines were distributed free of charge to the people consulted, who also benefited from free care and appliances, according to Professor Coumé.
"We screen for chronic pathologies, classical, diabetic and cases of high blood pressure, as well as geriatric pathologies" leading to loss of functional independence and handicaps, he said.
He reassured that the patients consulted will be provided with the equipment they need to improve their mobility and "make the most of their environment".
