On Thursday, Aïssatou Diokhané Sow, national coordinator of Senegal's urban modernization program (PROMOVILLES), visited road and sanitation sites in the communes of Foundiougne and Sokone, in the Fatick region (west), to see the progress of work costing over one billion six hundred million CFA francs undertaken in these two towns by the program.

This visit is part of the extension of PROMOVILLES' activities which, on the instructions of the Head of State, Macky Sall, is involved in stormwater drainage, particularly in localities facing flooding problems, such as Sokone and Foundiougne.

In Foundiougne, the roadworks currently underway cover a 1.7 km stretch divided into three sections, at a total cost of eight hundred and ninety-seven million CFA francs. Work is scheduled for completion in September.

In Sokone, where work has already begun on two sections, the major difficulty is related to flooding. The project involves a 1.5 km stretch of road, as well as drainage work at a total cost of almost nine hundred million CFA francs.

"On the 1.5 km we're building, we've installed pipes to drain rainwater from low-lying areas, notably the health post and one of the elementary schools. and one of the elementary schools, with a drainage system that will collect rainwater and carry it to the inlet," explained Ms. Sow.

She announced that the pavement work would follow, hoping that "by the start of the winter season, the sanitation work could at least be completed to relieve the population".

The first deputy mayor of Sokone, Rokhaya Ndiaye Mané, spoke of an old grievance that is about to be satisfied. She hopes that this work will help to eradicate the flooding that has become recurrent in this commune.

She points out that several Sokone neighborhoods were affected by rainwater during the rainy season, notably Diamaguène-centre, Ndangane, Diamaguène-nord, Diamaguène-sud and Léona. These are all neighborhoods that will be relieved by the work, which will be completed by the end of November," she enthused.

Ousmane Seynabou Dione, second deputy mayor of Foundiougne, affirms that PROMOVILES has finished making its mark on the entire national territory through its many "very positive" achievements.

"These achievements have been eagerly awaited by the people of Foundiougne, which is a rather unusual locality with its clayey sand, which means that we are constantly faced with flooding problems. The sanitation works and the roads will relieve the population of the need to get around," he said.

The prefect of the Foundiougne department, Ousseynou Mbaye, points out that the contracting companies are working "closely" with the local authorities.

He noted the "positive appreciation" of the local populations, who have embraced the project because they have been involved from the very start of the work, through the local authorities.s the start of work, through awareness-raising activities designed to enable them to take ownership of this "relevant intervention" by PROMOVILLES.

"We're reassured by what we've seen in the field, because in Foundiougne, for example, we have a technical execution rate of 45%, whereas here in Sokone, where the work is much more complicated and demanding, we're over 10% for the overall project. But as far as the sanitation work is concerned, the pipe-laying rate, which is quite comfortable, is 90%", noted the head of the departmental executive.
