France

On presentation of a medical certificate, employees will be able to take up to two days off work in this French town. A great advance for women.

The socialist mayor of the city of Saint-Ouen, Karim Bouamrane announced on Twitter: his town hall has opted for the implementation of a menstrual leave. In concrete terms, the city's employees will be able to take up to two days off work, telecommute or adjust their schedules, "in order to be able to take advantage of the time off.The idea is to help women who are pregnant to take advantage of the time off to do so, without having to show a doctor's certificate. The idea is to help women who suffer from endometriosis or painful periods.

"Of the 2,000 people who work for the city, 60% are women. It was while talking to them that I realized that half of them were suffering in silence. A subject that was put aside, if not taboo. Strong decisions had to be taken to relieve them," he said in a statement.

A first in France

The menstrual leave in this town, a first in France, will be effective from March 27.

According to figures from the Ministry of Health, 10% of French women suffer from endometriosis, a disease recognized as a " long-term condition "since January 2022, recalls Le Figaro.

This progress for women in Saint-Ouen comes a few weeks after the adoption in Spain of a similar leave, voted by the Spanish deputies.
