In a few years, the city of Ouagadougou and its surrounding communes will be a reference metropolis in West Africa. In any case, this is the objective of the Support for Urban Growth and Metropolitan Governance of Greater Ouaga (PAGO) project.

Today's session between PAGO stakeholders aims to involve local actors and beneficiaries of the project in its development, design and implementation. The project coordinator, Valentin Bayiri, explained that the goal is to have a reliable, regularly updated database to facilitate decision-making. updated, in order to facilitate decision-making in terms of development and planning in the "Greater Ouaga" area.

The "Grand Ouaga" project is a holistic project to give the territory hosting the capital of Burkina Faso a metropolitan status worthy of the country's ambitions in order to make it a reference center in West Africa. In its entirety, the "Greater Ouaga" covers an area of 4,000 km2 with a population of over 4,700,000 inhabitants. Ten communes, including Saaba, Komki Ipala, Koubri, Komsilga, Tanghin Dassouri, Pabré, Loumbila, Sourgoubila and Bingo, are involved in the "Grand Ouaga". This union was made through consultations that led to the signing of the constitutive convention of the community of municipalities of the project on February 12, 2021. According to him, this is a key step in the process that has three specific objectives.

These are the evaluation of the consideration of the SDGs in the current governance and planning of the "Greater Ouaga" area, the prioritization of relevant SDGs with a view to monitoring them through the development of a relevant tool. One of the results envisaged, not the least, is to make recommendations on the operationalization of the SDGs.

Impact on the populations concerned

PAGO will have a positive impact on the lives of the citizens of all the member communes of the "Greater Ouaga". This is the conviction of the third vice-president of the special delegation of the Centre, Maimounata Ouédraogo. According to her, the first officials of the communes concerned have committed themselves, within the framework of the construction of the "Greater Ouaga" territory, to developing several governance tools to promote inclusive and sustainable development. The project also includes a study that will lead to the development of a tool for monitoring the SDGs in each village and sector of "Greater Ouaga". This tool, she continued, will facilitate the collection of disaggregated data to monitor and evaluate the process.

The project is funded by the European Union to the tune of more than 3 billion CFA francs. This funding was done through a call for projects that it launched for the benefit of the countries of the Caribbean Pacific (ACP) which the city of Ouagadougou and its partner (Metropolis of Lyon) were winners.
