DRC: DRC and CAFI sign a partnership agreement for a sustainable forest management program

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) represented by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Eve Bazaiba Masudi, proceeded on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, to the signing of the partnership contract of the Sustainable Forest Management Program (SFMP) with the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI).

According to the services of Minister Bazaiba, this program financed by CAFI through the national REDD+ fund with an amount of more than 7 million U.S. dollars (USD) focuses on improving forest governance through support to land use planning. It is also about forest management and the promotion of sustainable management practices.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, who leads the presidency of the CAFI Secretariat, welcomed this partnership in forest governance. He also, by the same occasion, noted the importance of the operationalization of the commitments subscribed by the DRC within the framework of CAFI, that in some months of the organization of the Pre COP27 in DRC and the COP27 in Egypt.

"The environmental and forestry potential that the DRC possesses refers to a responsibility to humanity and constitutes a commitment of the partners to fight against climate change with a determination to achieve temperature mitigation 1.5 C⁰ and help forest countries to adapt to the new deal of climate issues. ", said Eve Bazaïba Masudi.

It should be noted that the program is part of the portfolio of the National REDD+ Fund of the DRC. It is led by the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, implemented by the French Development Agency (AFD).
