Côte d'Ivoire/Public Service. Signature of a new social truce: between the Ivorian government and trade unions

A social truce between the government of Côte d'Ivoire and the trade unions has been signed. This Monday, August 08, 2022, this truce aims to improve the working and living conditions of Ivorian civil servants.

It should be noted that the social truce signed in July 2017 has reached its expiration, representatives of trade unions as well as the Ivorian government held a meeting for the signing of a new social truce. This meeting which took place this Monday, August 08, 2022 at the primacy of Côte d'Ivoire and saw the presence of several local authorities including Prime Minister Patrick Achi.

The points of improvement of resolutions taken

During this meeting, several issues relating to the living and working conditions of civil servants of the State of Côte d'Ivoire were discussed. A total of 345 claims were mentioned, of which 88 were corporatist and 257 related to governance.

Among the resolutions taken, the government has announced the revision of the monthly transport premium from the end of August 2022. To this end, premiums will increase from 7,000 CFA francs to 20,000 CFA francs for civil servants and state agents residing in the city of Abidjan. Civil servants and government employees working in Bouaké and the other regional capitals will receive a bonus of 15,000 CFA francs. As for the agents of the other localities of the country, their premiums will be increased from 5 000 to 10 000 CFA francs. A social truce...

These measures taken today give concrete expression to the decisions taken at the meeting held on Friday 22 July 2022.

Indeed, the government and the public service unions had signed a social truce for a period of 5 years on August 17, 2017. At the end of this truce, the Ivorian government had committed to satisfy the trade union demands. In return, the organizations had resolved to observe a social truce and to favor the path of dialogue to calm the climate in order to promote the mobilization of resources necessary to finance their grievances and claims.

After 5 years of implementation, both parties considered the results of the memoranda of understanding on claims and social truce to be globally satisfactory.

The president of the union group, Famille Iroko, Théodore Gnagna Zadi, expressed his joy at the resolutions taken by the President of the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, in favor of civil servants.

"What were my relief and my joy when on the evening of August 6, 2022, the president materialized this vision and these achievements. I was happy for you. We will continue to pursue the remaining demands and we will get them. On this day we sign this new truce. These decisions are a great relief for the civil servants of Côte d'Ivoire who see their situations improve," he said at the end of the ceremony of the social truce.
