France

As part of the Design 2022 International Biennial, the Fibois42 interprofessional network and the town of Sorbiers have come up with a "microarchitecture" made of local wood, officially presented on Thursday.

Built in the Fraisse Park, it serves as an information support on the forest and the wood industry. This project is entitled "Let's fork in the 21st century with the material of the future, wood: a journey from the forest to sustainable construction".

The structure, built by the Compagnons du devoir and with the support of the Department, uses several species of local wood supplied by the couramiaude Vray sawmill (fir in the sheltered part, Douglas fir and larch for the vertical exposed parts, and decking and roofing made of naturally durable hardwood). It is a demonstration of the possibilities that wood offers in the field of construction.

A natural loop project

While the information panels placed on the structure present the specificities of the biodiversity of Fraisse Park, and the work of the municipality in terms of sustainable development, places are left open to the public. In addition to the information panels on the structure that present the specific characteristics of the Fraisse Park's biodiversity and the municipality's work in terms of sustainable development, there are also spaces for schools and/or Sorbonne associations to display their work in the field of sustainable development. Finally, in June, students from the IUT of Saint-Etienne will organize activities around this micro-architecture, in connection with the Sustainable Development Week.

This construction, whose design was entrusted to the designer Juliette Defossez from Saint-Etienne, will be part of the future "Nature, Heritage and Design Loop". which aims by 2023 to enhance the natural and historical heritage of the Fraisse Park where nearly 1,000 trees and shrubs have been identified, including 30% of Atlas cedars.
