Ouagadougou is hosting the annual review of the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) country cooperation programme on 7 and 8 December 2021. The Secretary General of the Ministry in charge of the economy, Abel Somé, presided over the opening ceremony.

In Burkina Faso, UNDP supports government efforts in collaboration with partners. These partnerships generate activities. The monitoring of these activities requires an assessment. It is with this in mind that the annual review of the UNDP country cooperation programme was initiated. For the UNDP Resident Representative, Mathieu Ciowela, this annual review is a moment of accountability between his institution, the government and partners in the implementation of cooperation programmes for Burkina Faso.

The meeting, which is scheduled to last two days, on 7 and 8 December 2021, will take stock of the implementation of projects and programmes in order to assess the progress and results achieved. This important meeting is also an opportunity to exchange on the difficulties encountered, to analyze the approaches used, to draw lessons learned from the development offer. It also provides an opportunity for participants to identify good practices and propose new solutions that will contribute to the development of the upcoming cooperation programme (2023-2027). This annual review comes one year before the end of the current cooperation cycle which runs from 2018 to 2022.

"With the accompaniment of the government, we have been able to mobilize resources to support the implementation of this cooperation program," Ciowela said with satisfaction. In all, 38 million dollars (22 billion CFA francs) is the budgetary volume of this year's program portfolio to support the development efforts of Burkina Faso towards the achievement of the MDGs. 85% of these resources have been mobilized by UNDP and the government from partners, he said. Despite the complex environment marked by the deterioration of the security situation and the coronavirus disease, the assessment shows a satisfactory performance in the implementation of the cooperation programme in 2021.

Mr. Ciowela said that UNDP's support had made it possible to formulate strategic planning tools - in this case the social cohesion strategy and the national reconciliation strategy - ensuring an inclusive and participatory development process. At the regional and local levels, the programme has provided direct support to local authorities and the population, including vulnerable and internally displaced persons, through various activities that support, inter alia, the development of a national plan of action. At the regional and local levels, the programme has provided direct support to local authorities and the population, including vulnerable people and internally displaced persons, through various activities supporting, among others, youth and women's entrepreneurship, livelihood improvement, the establishment of economic infrastructure and training.

This review is annual and, at each meeting, the government takes part. According to the representative of the Minister of the Economy, Abel Somé, the Government appreciates the cooperation with UNDP insofar as its interventions in Burkina are in line with the national priorities set out in the new National Economic and Social Development Plan (PNDES), 2021-2025. "And as was mentioned earlier at the opening, when you look at the priorities in the PNDES guidelines, you realize that the three pillars that the cooperation programme has put forward are fully aligned with the national priorities. He stressed that "the three pillars that the cooperation programme has put forward are totally aligned with the issues of governance, economic production, resilience and security. He expressed the hope that the projects that will be defined at the end of the work can be implemented in the sense of the realization of the orientations of this program.
