Vietnam/Germany donates 2.6 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs took delivery on Monday 27 September of 2.6 million doses of AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine offered by the German government.

Deputy Foreign Minister To Anh Dung thanked the German government for the donation via a bilateral channel as well as its medical aid to Vietnam, including more than 850,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine via the Covax device and many medical supplies and equipment.

He considered the practical support as a bright proof of the friendship between the two nations amid the two sides' celebration of the 10th anniversary of their strategic partnership (October 11, 2011-2021).

Ambassador Guido Hildner appreciated Vietnam's donation of 100,000 face masks to Germany immediately after the outbreak. He also welcomed the continued support to Vietnam by many localities, agencies and organizations in Germany, which he said reflected the solidarity between the two peoples.

The diplomat said Germany would stand by Vietnam to meet the challenges of COVID-19.

Germany will further help Vietnam in the coming time through the implementation of their joint One Health project and the construction of a center for infectious disease prevention and control in Vietnam, he added.

He expressed confidence that the Vietnamese government's determination and measures would soon push back the pandemic, and that trade between the two countries would be restored as soon as possible.

The batch of vaccines arrived at the Tân Son Nhât International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday evening, September 26. To date, Germany's assistance with vaccines and medical equipment is the largest given by an EU member state to Vietnam.
