The Cycléco association recovers discarded bicycles from a waste disposal site in Desvres and puts them back in the saddle. Once restored, 80% of these bikes are back on the road. #TheyHaveTheSolution

Your household waste is recycled, so are your bicycles! The Cycléco association in Boulogne-sur-Mer, in the Pas-de-Calais, recovers discarded bicycles from a waste disposal centre and refurbishes them. They are then resold at reduced prices to people who need them.

Dimitri Renauld is in charge of the Desvres waste disposal centre and works in partnership with the Cycleco association, which is part of the Rivages Propres structure. He takes back the machines in any state. " As soon as we have a stock of 15 to 20 bikes, we call Rivage Propre and they come and collect them", he explains.

100 bikes recovered in 6 months

A free recovery, thanks to a partnership signed between the association of reintegration and the communities of communes of Boulonnais. For 6 months, more than 100 bikes have joined the Cycléco workshop and 80% of them have been able to get back on the road after being restored. An ecological and solidarity-based approach.

"The desire is not necessarily to make a profit on it. It's mainly to allow people who don't necessarily have the means to get back on their bikes. Our children's bikes cost 25 euros and our adult bikes range from 30 to 60 euros maximum", explains Thomas Leleu, Cycleco's technical manager.

A team of young people is in charge of repairs. This is a first experience that helps them to find a job. The association has met with great success in the area. Every month, about thirty recycled bikes are given a second life.
